Portland Youth Football - Building Character Encouraging Leadership. Our ultimate goal is to provide our players with the football skills, fundamentals and experiences to help them compete successfully and secure position placement on a local high school
2015 Return to Play Protocol *- If a concussion is diagnosed, this document outlines the steps in Portland Youth Football's action plan for return to play.
A New Study by USA Football- Cut & paste this link into your browser: "http://usafootball.com/blogs/health-and-safety/post/8127?utm_source" to learn about a new study commissioned by USA Football, the sport's national governing body. It shows that 90% of nearly 4,000 players in a 2-year study sustained no injuries resulting in missed practices or games & that "coach & player education, including proper tackling, limited contact drills & injury recognition, including identifying concussions, should be mandatory in football."
Concussion Assessment and Action Plan *- PYFL coaches are asked to review and print this document provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Provided in PDF format, this Fact Sheet for Coaches provides important information on concussion, its symptoms, prevention, and an action plan should they think a player has a concussion. Parents can use this tool also if they suspect an injury.
Helmet Reconditioning *- A guide to keeping your athlete's most important piece of equipment in top-notch condition. The reconditioning process cleans, sanitizes, inspects, and re-certifies your player's helmet. Many manufacturers require that they themselves recondition their helmets, so be sure to check with your particular helmet's manufacturer first. You'll want to find a NAERA certified helmet reconditioner. All helmets provided by PYFL are reconditioned annually.
Lightning Safety *- Although we play football in most types of weather, including rain and snow, it is the policy of PYFL to suspend play in the event of thunder or lightning, for a period of at least 30 minutes. If thunder is heard or lightning displayed, play will be discontinued immediately, and shelter sought, until game officials and/or coaches deem conditions safe.
Minimizing Injuries on the Football Field *- Parents of young athletes are key to safe football. They should be well-informed about specific injury prevention measures, including safer blocking & tackling techniques that do not use the head. They should be free to make unannounced visits to practices & should ask questions if they see something that seems unsafe. In addition, parents should report all injuries to PYFL & should reinforce compliance with treatments or rehabilitation after injury.
Protecting Against Abuse *- Child abuse-in its many forms-can occur anywhere and at any time. Therefore, it is one of PYFL's top priorities to make sure that our youth sports environment is a safe haven: a place where all children can fully enjoy their participation while being free from all forms of abuse. ALTHOUGH ALL PYFL COACHES (HEAD COACH AND ALL ASSISTANTS) MUST FIRST PASS A LEAGUE MANDATED BACKGROUND CHECK PERFORMED BY THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR SAFETY INITIATIVES (NCIS), this is a guide to help further keep our athletes safe.
